University of Tulsa Names ASU Law Dean Stacy Leeds as 22nd President

The University of Tulsa has selected Stacy Leeds, current dean of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, as its 22nd president, effective July 1, 2026. The announcement came from the university’s Board of Trustees on March 9, 2026, following a competitive national search.

Leeds, a 1997 graduate of the University of Tulsa College of Law, brings more than 25 years of experience as a professor, administrator, and leader at major research institutions. She previously served as dean and vice chancellor for economic development at the University of Arkansas School of Law (2011–2018), where she became the first Native American woman to lead a U.S. law school. At ASU since 2021 (as dean since 2023), she has focused on innovation, access, wellness, and amplifying strengths in legal education.

A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Leeds has also served as a justice on the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court, chair of the Cherokee Nation Gaming Commission, and in judicial roles for other tribes (e.g., chief judge for Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, associate judge for Kaw Nation Supreme Court). She holds a J.D. from the University of Tulsa, an LL.M. from the University of Wisconsin, an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a bachelor’s in history from Washington University in St. Louis.

Board Chair Marcia MacLeod praised Leeds’ selection, stating the trustees are confident in her ability to guide the university forward. Interim President Rick Dickson welcomed her as an alumna and native Oklahoman, noting this appointment marks milestones: Leeds is the third UTulsa graduate to lead the institution and the first woman to serve as permanent president (following interim female leadership).

Leeds described the role as a “personal and professional homecoming,” expressing excitement about returning to her alma mater and contributing to its future. She succeeds Brad Carson (who stepped down earlier) and will take over from interim President Dickson on July 1.

This leadership change comes as the University of Tulsa continues evolving its academic programs, research focus, and community engagement, particularly in energy, law, and Indigenous studies—areas where Leeds’ expertise in Indian law and higher education administration could play a key role.

Public reactions have been positive, with many highlighting her trailblazing career, Cherokee Nation ties, and alumni connection as strengths for the private Oklahoma university.

This appointment underscores a focus on experienced, innovative leadership with deep roots in Oklahoma and legal education. Leeds’ transition from ASU Law dean to UTulsa president is set to begin this summer. If you’d like more on her background, the search process, or implications for the university, let me know!
