AEW star Billy Gunn recently opened up about his enduring friendship with former WWE writer and on-screen partner Road Dogg (Brian James), calling him his favorite wrestler of all time due to their deep personal bond that has lasted well beyond their in-ring days.
In a new interview with Monopoly Events (conducted in early March 2026 and shared via YouTube and wrestling media outlets), Gunn reflected on why Road Dogg holds that special place in his heart. The two were longtime tag team partners as The New Age Outlaws in WWE during the Attitude Era, and later part of D-Generation X, but Gunn emphasized that their real-life connection goes far deeper than any storyline or title run.
“He is my favorite of all time because he was part of one of the best times in wrestling and he is my true partner because I talk to him all the time and it’s just to say, ‘hello’ and that you can’t beat,” Gunn said. “I talk to him all the time… it’s just to say hello, and that you can’t beat.”
The comment highlights how their relationship has remained strong even after Road Dogg transitioned from in-ring work to a prominent backstage role as a WWE writer and producer (a position he held until his recent departure from the company in late 2025). Gunn, now 62 and still active in AEW (where he competes sporadically and works with the Acclaimed and other talents), credited the constant communication as the foundation of their friendship.
Despite early challenges—Road Dogg has previously shared in interviews that he and Gunn weren’t close friends or roommates during their peak tag team years, describing initial personality clashes—the two clearly grew into a genuine brotherhood. Fans have long speculated about a potential on-screen reunion, especially after Road Dogg’s WWE exit. The pair did reunite briefly as The New Age Outlaws for an independent appearance in December 2025 at Great Lakes Championship Wrestling’s Blizzard Brawl event in Milwaukee, proving their chemistry still draws crowds.
Wrestling insiders note that Gunn’s praise comes at a time when cross-promotional respect is rare between WWE and AEW talents. Road Dogg has not publicly commented on Gunn’s recent remarks, but their history suggests the sentiment is mutual.
For fans, Gunn’s words serve as a reminder of wrestling’s unique ability to forge lifelong bonds. The New Age Outlaws remain one of the most iconic tag teams of the Attitude Era, inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 as part of D-Generation X.
